homework questions- task one

Task One

1. A storm in Australia affects people by trees falling down onto roofs or roofs being blown off homes. When this happens it causes damage to the persons house and then they have to find somewhere else to live. Storms can kill someone (if they are struck by lighting). Hail Storms will damage peoples cars and can injure people.

2. A storm occurs in extremely moist air. Water droplets and ice crystals swirl around inside giant storm clouds. Storms can cause bolts of lightning to jump from a cloud to the ground.

3. Storms can wreck our environment when strong winds make the trees fall down.
It can also destroy animal homes like trees, which are homes to Koala’s and Birds. The lightning can strike our electricity lines and can cause a fire. Too much rain can cause dams, rivers and lakes to overflow and can flood a large area of land.

4. If there was a really bad storm the government would send out helicopters for search and rescue. Families gather together if family members are lost. They get government support to rebuild houses that have been damaged.

5. On April 14, 1999, the residents of Sydney, NSW were in a huge hailstorm. The storm that continued for the next two weeks (finishing on 28 April) brought damage to electricity lines, roofs, walls and windows. It flooded homes and wrecked the living conditions of 20 000 families. The overall damage to public buildings was around $45 million, also 60 marine craft were damaged. The people of Sydney reacted quickly to this natural disaster. There were many volunteers , although in April 2000, the media reported that over 100 houses were still waiting for roof repairs.
